The Ears of Sundry Gods:
|
"But though there were different names for God in all the different languages in the world and God understood what all the people who prayed said in their different languages still God remained always the same God and God's real name was God." James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man More about this piece continued below |

The most prized attribute of a god is an acute sense of hearing, when we tell of our desires and regrets. This piece was inspired by September 11, when so many prayers were being prayed to opposing gods. Prayers at cross-purposes, canceled each other out. So many prayers were in the air, that none was intelligible. I imagined a din of voices seeking the ears of the gods who thrive in the human heart and imagination. For this show, the "ears" were pinned directly to the wall, rather than being displayed in a shadow box. |
